AROUND HUELGOAT
Huelgoat,
which translates from Breton as "high wood", is well known for its
mystic atmosphere. The forest is scattered with rocky outcrops and
gigantic granite boulders, many of which are the subject of local
legend and folklore - the region reputedly having been populated
by ghosts, devils, giants and other supernatural beings.
The usual way of visiting the natural curiosities of Huelgoat starts
at the lake and roughly follows the Argent River. The piles of rocks
lying in strange positions have been given evocative names such
as the Devil's Grotto and the Virgins Kitchen.
The Trembling Rock, a huge granite block over 100 tons in weight,
can be rocked by a child who knows just where to apply pressure.
Le Champignon
Further into the forest is Arthur's Grotto where sleeps the legendary
King, the Boars Pool, the Waterfall and the Fairy's Pool.
The Ancient Camp d'Artus is an iron age fort where Ceasar's legions
camped and is one of the most important sites of its type in Western
France.
